Martensitic Stainless Steel Coil & Strip
As experts in light-gauge, tight-tolerance stainless steel, we work with a variety of specialized metals, including martensitic grades.
This category is known as 400-series stainless steel. Martensitic stainless steel coil, strip, and sheet products have a high amount of chromium (12-18%) and carbon (as much as 1.2%). Some alloys include nickel, manganese, or molybdenum.
What Are the Benefits of Martensitic Stainless Steel Sheet Products?
The martensitic family is less common in industrial settings than austenitic or ferritic, but it has unique properties that fit certain applications perfectly:
- Outstanding hardness
- Excellent wear resistance
- High tensile strength
- Ferromagnetic material
- Compatibility with heat treatment and other hardening methods
These alloys offer medium corrosion resistance and some ductility, but their low weldability makes these alloys a better choice for mechanical parts and tools than for high-pressure fixtures.
What Type of Martensitic Stainless Steel Coil Do You Need?
We work with many types of martensitic stainless steel grades, including low- and high-carbon alloys:
- Grade 410: General-purpose alloy with high strength and better formability.
- Grade 420: Higher carbon content for greater hardness and wear resistance.
- Grade 440: Increased chromium content for improved corrosion resistance and toughness.
- 17-4PH: Precipitation-hardened martensitic stainless steel for exceptional precision.
- 17-7PH: A precipitation-hardened alloy that has austenitic properties when
annealed.
Common Applications of Martensitic Stainless Steel Strip & Sheet
Common applications for martensitic stainless steel strip and sheet products include surgical instruments, bushings, mechanical parts, turbine blades, precision assemblies, tools, and measuring instruments.
Capabilities for Martensitic Stainless Steel at Eagle Metals
Eagle Metals specializes in custom quantities, starting at 100 pounds for minimum order quantities (MOQ) and still able to handle master coils up to 740 PIW.
Along with our tight tolerance sheet, strip, and coil, we offer several in-house capabilities. We can cut your items to length as well as perform annealing, edge conditioning, slitting, tension leveling, and traverse-winding. We can reduce size, change dimensions, and alter physical and mechanical properties, as needed, to specification.
