Why Tight Tolerance Roll Grinding Matters

The condition of a work roll determines the quality of every coil that passes through it. A roll that is out of round by even a few ten-thousandths of an inch will produce strip with gauge variation, surface marks, or edge wave. For customers in aerospace and defense or medical device manufacturing, those defects mean rejected parts and lost production time.

Eagle Metals grinds to +/-.0002" and can produce surface roughness (RA) from 3 to 40 depending on the application. We handle D2, M4, and carbide roll materials in straight cylinders, crowns, tapers, and slitting tooling configurations. Because we make and maintain all of our own work rolls in-house using our CNC machining department, there is no wait on outside vendors when a roll needs attention.

Roll Grinding for Stainless Steel, Copper, Nickel, and Carbon Steel

Eagle Metals processes stainless steel, copper alloys, nickel, and carbon steel. Each alloy family places different demands on roll surface condition. Our grinding capacity covers rolls up to 7 feet in length, 4,000 lbs. max weight, and diameters from .500" to 22". Roll grinding services are available for both custom-made and incoming work rolls.

Roll Grinding FAQs

Turnaround depends on roll size, profile type, and current workload. Eagle Metals prioritizes fast turnaround to minimize production downtime. Contact us with your roll specs for a time estimate.

Frequency depends on the alloy being rolled, production volume, and required surface finish. Rolls used on harder alloys or at tighter tolerances wear faster and need more frequent grinding cycles to maintain strip quality.

Yes. Provide your dimensional and surface finish requirements, and we will grind to your spec. We handle straight cylinders, crowns, tapers, and slitting tooling profiles.

Roll grinding restores or finishes a roll to precise tolerances and surface specifications. Roll making involves manufacturing the roll itself from raw material. Eagle Metals offers both through our CNC machining and roll making department.
